IU High School Content Design System

Summer Project for IU High School

1 Content Designer x 3 Months

The One where I Increased Engagement with a Conversational Content Design System.

In this project, I was a Content Designer at IU High School.

I took this up to learn skills of voice & tone and content design systems.

Problem

Students struggled to stay focused due to a low engaging learning experience.

Outcome

So I made a conversational content design to enhance user engagement and satisfaction.

A case study shows that conversational content boosts student engagement by making them feel more involved and invested in their learning.

Method

To achieve this, I did the project in three folds…

1

First, I spoke to folks and learnt about their challenges in creating content.

Course Designers

Teachers

Administrators

Interviews helped me learn that —

Course Designers lack guidelines and need repetitive training.

Limited resources to automate content creation.

2

Second, I conducted a course content audit.

The Content Audit helped me learn that —

Leverage points of interaction to make it conversational

Information is better conveyed with simple words.

3

And finally, I identified interaction points that would increase content engagement.

Thematic Analysis helped me learn that —

Include visual indications to improve learning.

Impact of calculated typography and content is higher.

Example

The Content Design System guides course designers to build conversation with students through content and improve engagement—

Voice & Tone

Friendly, approachable, and supportive.

Don't

Use vague titles like “Purpose.”

Do

Use clear titles such as What Are We Doing and Why? to provide context.

Don't

Label steps simply as “Instructions.”

Do

Use titles like How to Get Started or Steps to Complete to make guidance more inviting.

Don't

Say “Submission Guidelines” without additional context.

Do

Use How to Submit Your Work to make it clear and student-friendly.

Content that talks

Added a personality that balances conversation with warmth, clarity, and encouragement — making challenging material approachable and supportive.

Warm

Communicates with empathy to create a sense of support.

Honest

Uses straightforward language, promoting trust and transparency.

Encouraging

Offers positive reinforcement, particularly with challenging content.

Knowledgeable but Approachable

Balances authority with friendliness, making students comfortable asking for help.

Responsive

Adjusts tone based on context, whether guiding through complex content or offering friendly check-ins.

Language

Positive language and inclusive styles to enhance clarity, creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

Positive Language: Emphasize what students can achieve.
Don't

Avoid missing deadlines to keep up.

Do

Stay on track by submitting on time!

Conversational Style: Use direct address (you) while maintaining professionalism.
Don't

The assignment must be completed by all students.

Do

You’ll need to complete this assignment to move on to the next lesson.
